Brain restructuring in progress.

I love, love, love articles that leave your brain a different shape than it was before reading them. This week Metafilter was responsible for a few more dings in my noggin:

Unspeakable Conversations. In which an activist for the disabled meets and debates an animal rights activist who believes that disabled babies should be killed. “He insists he doesn’t want to kill me,” she begins.

The Large Hadron Collider went online this week. OK, I know that some people have been claiming it’ll create black holes and cause the end of the world, but we know better, right?

Look, there have been many, many occasions when people were sure the end of the world was nigh - but nothing happened! Nothing happened, several times over. So when people tell you that something is going to cause the apocalypse, you know better than to take their claims on face value!

Look, if you don’t believe me, just check in on CERN where they’re conducting an experiment right now. Look at the webcam, and rest easy!

Every week she demands to know what my wife is eating. How much weight she’s gained. How her blood pressure has been. How her blood sugar is doing. If we’ve been good, her smile makes us glow for the rest of the week. If we’ve been bad, we pay for it with a couple of expensive days at the hospital.

I believe in Dr. Reyes despite not believing in god. Or maybe because of it. Read more…
