In the space of three weeks, I flew to Davao twice. First, to celebrate my grandmother’s 85th birthday. The next, to bid her goodbye.

We always knew this day would come, but we never really took it seriously. I mean, who would? Nanay had never retired, she still went to work every day, running the company she founded with my mom. The night before she passed, she’d been ballroom dancing with my mother.

She didn’t look a day above seventy. We believed Nanay to be immortal: when she learned my brother’s first diplomatic posting would take him away for seven years, she complained that she would probably be gone by the time he came back from South Africa. When I heard this, I just laughed. Nanay, gone? Inconceivable!
