I’m *so* loving this comment on Carlos Celdran’s blog.
“Maybe finally, for the first time EVER, the Philippines followed the effective counter-terrorist procedures practiced everywhere by elite special force units around the world?
”Maybe this was a very good indication of the move towards AFP (and the PNP SAF) modernization, and yet here are the bleeding heart, spoiled rotten Philippine journalists all crying foul over this progress….
“…I really cannot help myself whenever I hear irrational and illogical 2nd guesses. In my past, I have both been in the Canadian military and in the media. And hearing someone 2nd guessing that the Philippine Police/Army were being purposedly unfair because it (screening) hasn’t happened before is practically unbearable for me.
“Note that I am not attacking your cause nor your political position in the matter. All I’m saying is that, that one particular issue you raised is not an issue at all. It is a tactic practiced internationally. Also, from the general tone within the military buff community, the end to the seige all falls within what other special force units around the world would have done.”
That was just a taste. Read the full comment (and the rest of the comments) here.

“Maybe people have grown tired of People Power - perhaps not the grand fiesta but the aftermath. Maybe the opposition can’t quite see that antipathy towards Mrs. Arroyo, and her husband and assorted hangers on, is matched only by hostility towards those who see a convicted plunderer as still a legitimate leader of this nation.” Inday Espina-Varona gets it, why can’t you? The Sound of Silence.
“We dreamed, we hoped, we helped put a new set of elite in power. And, after all was said and done, we had nothing but the sad realization that we had just allowed ourselves to be used.” Old but sadly more relevant than ever: The Romance of Rebellion.
The feeling on the ground.
Anybody remember how it felt just before Edsa II? I remember feeling like a mouse in a cage, just waiting for the opportunity to be let out of work to join the rapidly swelling crowd. As I understood it, I wasn’t alone - a lot of people cared one way or another, and were willing to put feet to pavement to show which side they were on.
I can’t help but compare and contrast then and now. When the wife YM’d me about Trillanes’ holing up in the Pen, and when my officemates got word of the same, most of us could only raise an eyebrow. Skepticism and ridicule carried the day. The wife YM’d me the jokes bouncing around her office: “May bagong demand si Trillanes… ipaatras ang kaso ni Sam at Piolo laban kay Lolit Solis!” “Gusto ni Trillanes, sya raw ang ipasok sa Bahay ni Kuya!” Read more…
