Basti begins.

I’ll be an uncle in a few months’ time. The first boy of his generation, in my family. The first Filamexican in the family, the first (I hope) of many.

As an uncle, I will promise only this: to stand for the Filipino part of his genetic heritage.

While I was out, our library breached the 500 mark. That’s a whole lotta dead trees – and the shelves are starting to complain. I’ve had to put the mass market paperbacks behind the bigger paperbacks and hardcovers, and we’re still short of shelf space.

The lack of real estate now puts me in a different mindset about buying books. I ask more difficult questions to myself now: “How long have I really wanted this book?” “Will I really read this, or will it just sit on the bedside table for a while?” “Could you at least get a good price out of it on Ebay?” The latter question made me buy two books in Books for Less that had nothing special going for them except the authors’ autographs: Betty White’s biography (I’m thinking about hanging on to this ‘til she croaks, then sell it at a higher price) , and an out-of-print Doonesbury collection (a little browning around the edges, but otherwise in excellent condition). pull my fingerThis is what an officemate asked me one evening, in all innocence. The words aren’t exactly what was said, but you’ll get the drift:

“So, since you don’t believe in God anymore, you can go and fuck around, and that would be OK, right, won’t be a problem for you?”

In fairness, my officemate’s been a churchgoer his whole life, as was I until about five years ago: I understand the Christian perception of a Godless life as necessarily an immoral one, or at least one without any moral guardrails.
